Why the best organizing system isn't the prettiest one, it's the one you'll actually use.
Have you ever looked at a perfectly organized pantry or color-coded closet on social media and thought, "Why can't I keep my house looking like that?"
You're not alone.
As a professional organizer, one of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is that there's one "right" way to organize a home.
There isn't.
In fact, one of the fastest ways to become frustrated is by trying to force yourself to use an organizing system that simply doesn't fit the way your brain works.
Your Home Should Work for You
What works beautifully for one person may be completely impractical for someone else.
Some people love opening a cupboard to see everything neatly tucked away.
Others need to see their belongings, or they'll forget they even own them.
Some people thrive with detailed labels and categories.
Others become overwhelmed by too many decisions and need systems that are simple and intuitive.
Neither approach is wrong.
The goal isn't to organize like someone else.
The goal is to create a home that works for you.
When Traditional Organizing Advice Doesn't Fit
Many people, including those with ADHD, find that conventional organizing advice doesn't always match the way they naturally function.
For example, some people struggle with:
- Remembering items that are hidden away.
- Maintaining complicated organizing systems.
- Feeling overwhelmed by too many categories.
- Starting organizing projects but struggling to finish them.
That doesn't mean they're lazy or disorganized.
It often means they need a different approach.
Simple, visible, easy-to-maintain systems are often far more successful than picture-perfect spaces that require constant upkeep.
The Best System Is the One You'll Stick With
One of the questions I ask every client is:
"Will this system still work on your busiest day?"
If the answer is no, it's probably too complicated.
An organizing system should make life easier, not create more work.
Sometimes that means open baskets instead of closed bins.
Sometimes it means fewer categories.
Sometimes it means placing everyday items where they're most convenient instead of where they "should" go.
The most successful organizing systems are the ones that fit naturally into your daily routine.
Real Homes Aren't Showrooms
Social media has convinced many of us that every drawer should look like a magazine.
Real life doesn't work that way.
Homes are meant to be lived in.
Children play.
People cook.
Laundry piles up.
Life gets busy.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal is creating systems that reduce stress, are easy to maintain, and make your home feel calmer and more functional.
Give Yourself Permission to Organize Differently
One of the most freeing moments for many of my clients is realizing they don't have to organize like everyone else.
If clear containers help you remember what's inside, use them.
If labels keep your family on the same page, fantastic.
If one large basket works better than six tiny containers, that's okay too.
Organization isn't about following someone else's rules.
It's about understanding your habits and designing systems that support them.
Your Home Should Work for You
Every home is different because every person is different.
Whether you're raising young children, balancing a demanding career, living with ADHD, or simply have habits that don't fit traditional organizing advice, your home should support the way you live.
The goal isn't perfection.
The goal isn't copying a picture from social media.
The goal is creating systems that make your daily life easier, reduce stress, and are simple enough to maintain long after the organizing session is over.
As a professional organizer, I don't measure success by how beautiful a pantry looks on day one. I measure it by whether the system is still working six months later.
Because the best organizing system isn't the one everyone else is using, it's the one that works for you.
