As the outdoor sports season reaches full stride, many athletes throughout Delta are focused on achieving new personal bests. While hockey and other indoor sports often dominate local headlines, the spring and summer months shine a spotlight on another thriving community—the growing track and field scene in North Delta.

One event that continues to inspire runners of every age is the annual Vancouver Sun Run. Since its inaugural race in 1985, the event has become Canada's largest 10-kilometre road race and one of North America's premier running events. Founded by Canadian Olympians Dr. Doug Clement, Dr. Diane Clement and Dr. Jack Taunton, the race was created to encourage healthier lifestyles while supporting elite amateur athletics.

From just 3,200 participants in its first year, the event eventually grew to more than 59,000 runners, attracting everyone from Olympic hopefuls to recreational walkers and families. Over four decades, the Sun Run has also contributed millions of dollars to local charities and literacy initiatives.

That spirit of community participation has found a strong home in North Delta.

The opening of the North Delta Track & Field Facility at North Delta Secondary School in 2021 marked a significant milestone for athletics in the City of Delta. Built at a cost of approximately $8 million, the complex became the first World Athletics-compliant track in Delta, providing local athletes with a training venue previously unavailable within the community.

Before its construction, many serious athletes were forced to travel to Burnaby, Richmond or UBC to access facilities capable of supporting high-performance training.

Today, the eight-lane competition track, grass infield, training areas, spectator seating and walking paths have become a hub for school athletics, community clubs and competitive athletes from across the Lower Mainland.

The project itself was shaped through extensive public consultation, with the City of Delta hosting several open houses that allowed residents and local sports organizations to provide input before construction began.

Among the organizations benefiting from the facility is the Universal Athletics Club, one of the region's premier track and field clubs. Founded in 2000 and affiliated with BC Athletics, the club focuses on youth development while offering programs in sprinting, middle-distance running, hurdles, jumps, throws and multi-event competition.

Training sessions are primarily held at the North Delta Track & Field Facility, with additional workouts taking place at Bear Creek Park in Surrey.

Programs range from introductory youth development sessions to high-performance training for athletes preparing for provincial and national competition. Younger athletes often train twice weekly, while elite competitors may train four to six days each week depending on the season.

The investment is already paying dividends.

Over the years, athletes from Delta-area programs have advanced through BC Athletics pathways to provincial championships, Canadian national championships, U SPORTS competition, NCAA scholarships and international events representing Canada.

The availability of a world-class facility within Delta is expected to accelerate that success by allowing local athletes to remain in their community while pursuing elite-level training.

Growth in track and field participation has also been supported by North Delta's expanding population, strong school athletic programs, modern facilities and increasing youth participation in organized sports.

For many families, the North Delta Track & Field Facility represents far more than a place to train. It has become a community gathering place where future champions begin their athletic journeys while promoting healthy, active lifestyles for participants of every age.

As Delta continues to grow, investments in facilities like this ensure the community remains well positioned to develop the next generation of athletes—whether they compete locally or eventually represent British Columbia and Canada on the world stage.
