For decades, hockey has often dominated the sports conversation across British Columbia. But quietly — and consistently — another Delta-based sports organization has been building one of the most respected youth baseball development systems in Canada.
The North Delta Blue Jays, now operating as the Delta Blue Jays, have evolved from a local grassroots baseball program into a nationally recognized pipeline for elite talent, college athletes, and professional players.
Founded in 1995 and joining the B.C. Premier Baseball League in 1999, the program established its home at Mackie Park in North Delta. Built alongside the long-standing North Delta Baseball Association — which dates back to 1962 — the organization focused on one core mission: keeping top baseball talent in Delta while developing elite-level athletes locally.
That vision changed youth baseball in Delta permanently.
From Local Program to National Powerhouse
In 2022, the organization expanded beyond North Delta and unified with the Delta Tigers under a new banner: the Delta Blue Jays.
The move reflected a broader regional identity, bringing together athletes from North Delta, Ladner, and Tsawwassen into one coordinated development system.
The results have been difficult to ignore.
The Delta Blue Jays captured three consecutive Baseball Canada National Championships (Ray Carter Cup), firmly establishing Delta as one of the strongest youth baseball communities in the country.
That success has also produced something even more important than championships — belief.
Young athletes growing up in Delta can now clearly see a pathway from local diamonds to college scholarships, professional baseball, and even Major League Baseball.
MLB Talent Developed in Delta
The Blue Jays system has helped develop several players who reached the highest level of the game.
Among the most recognizable alumni are:
- Justin Morneau — former American League MVP and one of Canada’s greatest hitters
- James Paxton — longtime MLB pitcher who played for the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and others
- Jeff Francis — former Colorado Rockies starter and one of Canada’s top pitchers of his era
Beyond the major leagues, dozens of athletes from the Delta system have advanced into NCAA baseball, Canadian college programs, summer leagues, and national team competition.
That steady stream of advancement has strengthened Delta’s reputation across British Columbia as a serious baseball community.
Brent Lavallee’s Rise Through the System
One of the most notable baseball success stories connected to Delta is Brent Lavallee.
After shifting his focus from hockey goaltending to baseball, Lavallee attended Louisiana State University before building a successful coaching career in collegiate baseball.
His coaching résumé quickly became impressive:
- Conference championships
- NAIA World Series appearances
- Red River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honours
- Nearly 400 wins while serving on coaching staffs
That success eventually earned him opportunities within the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
Lavallee managed the Vancouver Canadians from 2022 through 2024, guiding the club to three consecutive Northwest League championship finals and earning League Manager of the Year recognition in 2024.
In 2025, the Blue Jays organization promoted him to manage the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
For many young athletes in Delta, his career represents another example of how local development systems can open doors far beyond community sports.
The Full Development Pipeline
What separates the Delta Blue Jays from many youth sports organizations is the depth of their player development structure.
The organization operates what many describe as a “full ladder system,” beginning with young athletes entering local baseball programs at age five and continuing through:
- House baseball
- Rep baseball
- AAA development
- Premier Baseball League competition
- College and professional opportunities
That structure has helped reduce player migration to larger urban centres while strengthening local athlete retention in Delta.
The impact extends beyond elite players.
The program now supports:
- Increased youth participation
- Expanded offseason training
- More field utilization
- Additional development teams
- Stronger volunteer coaching systems
Coaches Who Built the Foundation
Programs like this are not built overnight.
The success of the Blue Jays organization is deeply tied to decades of volunteer leadership, coaching dedication, and community involvement.
Several influential figures helped shape the organization’s culture and direction, including:
Ernie Hawkins
A legendary local baseball figure known for his player-first approach and long-term commitment to athlete development.
Bob Burkmar
Instrumental in bringing Premier Baseball League baseball to North Delta and helping launch the Blue Jays organization in the 1990s.
Jack Thompson
A modern-era development leader focused on high-performance training and player advancement. Founder of the 5 Tool Baseball training program.
Additional contributors such as Gerry White and Jeff Stebbings also played important roles in strengthening the local baseball culture.
More Than Baseball
The Blue Jays organization has become more than a competitive sports program.
It now serves as a community asset that helps strengthen local identity, mentorship, youth development, and civic pride.
Major tournaments and championship events bring visibility to Delta. Young athletes gain role models. Coaches mentor future coaches. Families stay engaged in community sports longer.
Most importantly, the program continues proving that elite athletes can be developed locally without leaving home.
That may be the organization’s greatest achievement of all.
