For many residents, the arrival of spring and summer means more time outdoors and renewed focus on fitness goals. For others, it means preparing for competition.

One event that continues to inspire runners and athletes across British Columbia is the annual Vancouver Sun Run, Canada's largest 10-kilometre road race. First held in 1985, the event was created by former Canadian Olympians Dr. Doug Clement and Diane Clement, alongside Dr. Jack Taunton, with the goal of promoting healthy lifestyles while supporting amateur athletics.

What began with just 3,200 participants has grown into one of North America's largest timed 10K races, attracting tens of thousands of runners annually and welcoming everyone from elite athletes to recreational walkers and families.

While the Sun Run takes place in Vancouver, its influence extends well beyond the city limits, including into North Delta, where local track and field programs continue to grow and develop athletes of all ages.

A Modern Facility Changes the Game

For decades, aspiring track and field athletes in North Delta often had to travel to communities such as Burnaby, Richmond, or Vancouver to access high-quality training facilities.

That changed in August 2021 with the opening of the North Delta Track & Field Facility at North Delta Secondary School. The approximately $8 million project became the first World Athletics-compliant track ever built in Delta.

The facility features:

  • Eight competition lanes
  • Grass infield
  • Walking paths
  • Spectator seating
  • Modern training and conditioning areas

The project followed extensive community consultation and public engagement, helping shape a facility that serves both school athletics and community sport organizations.

Today, the facility has become a focal point for athletic development in North Delta.

Universal Athletics Club Leading Development

One of the primary organizations utilizing the North Delta track is the Universal Athletics Club.

Founded in 2000 and registered with BC Athletics, the club focuses on youth development, competitive athletics, and community participation. Programs include:

  • Sprinting
  • Distance running
  • Hurdles
  • Jumps
  • Throws
  • Multi-event training

Training takes place primarily at the North Delta Track & Field Facility and at Bear Creek Park Track in Surrey.

The club offers opportunities for athletes ranging from beginners to highly competitive competitors, helping introduce hundreds of young athletes to track and field each year.

Creating Opportunities Close to Home

The availability of a world-class facility has created new opportunities for local athletes.

Rather than travelling long distances to train, athletes can now develop their skills within their own community while benefiting from modern infrastructure and organized coaching programs.

Several athletes from Delta-area programs have advanced through BC Athletics pathways to compete at:

  • Provincial Championships
  • Canadian National Championships
  • U SPORTS competitions
  • NCAA programs in the United States
  • International competitions through Athletics Canada development programs

The facility is expected to continue increasing the number of elite athletes emerging from Delta as training opportunities become more accessible locally.

Why Track and Field Is Growing in Delta

Several factors have contributed to the growth of track and field participation throughout Delta:

  • Population growth in North Delta and Surrey
  • Strong school athletic programs
  • BC Athletics development initiatives
  • Modern facilities
  • Community-based clubs
  • Increased youth sports participation

Combined, these factors have created an environment where more young athletes can discover the sport, develop their abilities, and pursue higher levels of competition.

More Than Competition

Track and field provides more than medals and personal records.

The sport encourages discipline, fitness, goal setting, and perseverance while creating opportunities for athletes of all ages and backgrounds to participate.

As North Delta continues to grow, the local track and field community is proving that world-class athletic development can happen close to home.

For many young athletes stepping onto the North Delta track for the first time, their journey may begin with a simple practice session. Where it ultimately leads remains to be seen.
