"This is Robert Skinner reporting from the streets of Delta with what may be the most important breaking news of the week."

""We're out of local strawberries.""

Well... I certainly am.

As a lifelong Delta resident—and a self-appointed expert in the serious business of eating strawberries—I consider Delta and Richmond to be the Napa Valley of strawberries. Every year I look forward to those sweet, juicy, locally grown beauties.

A few weeks ago my family made our annual pilgrimage to Emma Lea Farms on Westham Island. Life was good. Baskets were full. Smiles were everywhere.

Last week we picked up another supply of local berries at Kin's Farm Market. My daughter baked homemade strawberry shortcakes, we added mountains of fresh whipped cream, and then...

Two teenage granddaughters happened.

The strawberries disappeared faster than free pizza at a high school graduation.

So this weekend I was dispatched on an emergency berry retrieval mission.

Kin's Market? No local strawberries. US baked only option!

"Okay," I thought. "They must be waiting for today's delivery."

The next stop? Meridian Farm Market in Tsawwassen But!

No strawberries.

Now my concern was becoming... official.

There was only one place left to go.

Emma Lea Farms. Surely the Strawberry Capital of Delta would save the day.

I drove all the way out to Westham Island, pulled into the parking lot, walked confidently toward the market...

...and was greeted by a sign that simply read:

"Strawberry Season Is Over."

Over? It's only June!

I'm pretty sure strawberry season used to last until my grandchildren went back to school, Ok wrong! but into July at least?

Now I have the difficult task of going home and explaining to two disappointed granddaughters why Papa failed in his sacred strawberry duties. Plus why I only had One Shortcake??

Perhaps blueberries will buy me a temporary pardon.
