After months of uncertainty surrounding Delta’s planned Beedie Long-Term Care Centre, something has changed at the Delta Hospital site: there is activity on the property again.

For residents who followed the project through its pause and eventual termination of the original construction contract, the obvious question is: Has construction restarted?

Not quite — at least not yet.

What Happened to the Beedie Project?

The planned 200-bed Beedie Long-Term Care Centre was intended to replace the aging 92-bed Mountain View Manor and significantly expand long-term-care capacity in Delta.

The project also received extraordinary local support. The Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation raised $18.25 million, including major contributions from Ryan and Cindy Beedie and the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society.

Then the provincial government's 2026 budget changed the picture.

Here is the sequence:

• February 2026: B.C. began reviewing major long-term-care capital projects as escalating construction costs put pressure on the provincial health infrastructure budget.
• The Beedie project was initially described as paused or “re-paced.” Site preparation work, however, was permitted to continue.
• April 2026: The Province terminated the existing construction contract for the Beedie Long-Term Care Centre, along with contracts for several other major health projects.
• The project itself was not officially cancelled. The Province continued to identify Beedie as part of its capital plan.
• Early site work continued, including ground densification, preloading and work associated with bringing municipal services onto the property.
• The unresolved issue remains the restart date. The Province has indicated that the timing for reinitiating the project will be determined through a future budget cycle.

So What Is Happening at the Site Now?

That distinction is important.

The activity residents can currently see does not necessarily mean construction of the 200-bed care centre has formally restarted.

Preloading and ground preparation are major undertakings in Delta because of local soil conditions. The land must be prepared and allowed to settle before a large building can safely be constructed.

Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma previously advised Delta Council that early work, including ground densification and municipal servicing, would continue because that investment would be required for future development of the site.

Approximately $15 million in provincial funding had already been spent on planning, preparation and site readiness by the end of 2025.

Millions Invested — But No Restart Date

That leaves Delta in an unusual position.

The community has raised $18.25 million for the Beedie project. Millions more in provincial funding have already been invested. The site continues to be prepared. Mountain View Manor still needs replacement, and the need for additional long-term-care beds has not disappeared.

Yet, as of August 15, Delta City News has been unable to find a provincial announcement confirming a new construction contract or a date for full construction to resume.

The activity now visible at the site is therefore encouraging — but it should not yet be mistaken for a full restart.

Delta City News will continue following the project and will report when the Province provides a firm construction timeline.
