Legacy and Longevity
Ladner Village represents longevity and resiliency in an era of rapid turn over and development. There are several businesses in Ladner Village that have stayed in business for over 30 years. These businesses don’t only show examples of resiliency through change but continue to keep the village’s historical feel. Niagara Pizza for example, has been in Ladner since 1975. Standing strong through five decades of economic cycles. Taverna Gorgona has successfully been in business for three decades. The restaurant manages to keep its “fishing village” vibe while keeping up with modern times.
“Village Branding” Value
By having these businesses keep their history, they attract tourism. They also help create an environment that attracts film productions. Many shows have been filmed in the village such as, “Smallville”, “Supernatural”, “Bates Motel”, etc. Bringing in economic growth for the community. As well as generates spill over revenue for newer start up shops.
The Cornerstone of Ladner’s Village
Serving as a “living room” for the community, Niagara brings nostalgia and warmth. Their restaurant has survived many economic downturns and the shift towards third-party delivery apps. Its legacy has survived on a “community-first” business model. The owners (the Dais) have spanned two generations since Tom Dais founded it in 1975. Before it was Niagara Pizza it was called “Ladner Pizza”. With a long history of serving the community, this family truly makes their restaurant a classic staple.
The “Market Effect”
This year the market is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary. While it’s not a singe shop or restaurant, it has been great economically for Ladner. Bringing people to the market every Sunday for several weeks through out the summer season. From local produce to home décor and food trucks, you can find everything at the Ladner Village Market. Live music and delicious deserts to try- every Sunday the village is packed with people. Each year the market brings in revenue for the community while giving free advertisement to the shops in the village. Proving the “Ladner Brand” is based on consistency and community.
Delta Auxiliary Thrift Shop and the “Circle Economy”
The Delta Hospital Auxiliary thrift shop has been around since 1976. They represent a unique business system. This system contributes millions in infrastructure. The thrift shop has several volunteers, and each dollar spent recycles back into The Delta Hospital Campus for Care. This is what creates the “Circle Economy” where the act of shopping directly improves the community’s healthcare tax base, ensuring the shop remains an essential destination regardless of broader economic downturns.
Future Outlook: Growth and Mentorship
The next decade will inevitably see change in the village. Where will we see this change? Within leadership. There will be a transition in leadership within these long-standing businesses. They will either be transitioning the generations taking over or transitioning to fit the new modern vibes that further development will bring.
Bottom line, Ladner's "Village" is an example of strength, adaptability, and flexibility. Showing tourists that Ladner's businesses thrive through community and consistency.
