History often moves quietly until one moment changes everything. The week of May 17 to May 23 has seen breakthroughs in exploration, political turning points, scientific achievements, cultural milestones, and natural disasters that reshaped nations and communities around the world.
🌍 North America
On May 17, 1792, the foundation of what became the New York Stock Exchange was established when 24 brokers signed the Buttonwood Agreement in New York City. The agreement helped formalize securities trading in the United States and became one of the most influential financial institutions in modern history.
On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens eruption erupted in one of the most destructive volcanic events in North American history. The eruption flattened forests, altered landscapes across Washington State, and killed 57 people. It transformed volcanic science, emergency management, and environmental monitoring across the continent. The disaster remains one of the most studied volcanic eruptions in modern history.
