One of Delta's most respected volunteer organizations is approaching a pivotal moment.
Members of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society (DHAS) are expected to gather on June 15 for a special requisition meeting that could determine the future leadership and direction of the organization.
The vote follows months of operational disruptions and growing concerns raised by some volunteers regarding governance, communication, organizational transparency, and the future operation of the Society's well-known Ladner Thrift Shop.
The outcome could have significant implications not only for the Auxiliary itself, but also for the hundreds of volunteers, donors, shoppers, and community members who have supported the organization for decades.
Why This Matters
The Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society has been a cornerstone of healthcare support in Delta for more than 50 years.
Founded in 1969, before the Delta Hospital was built, the organization has raised millions of dollars to support patient care, equipment purchases, comfort programs, and healthcare services connected to Delta Hospital and the Campus of Care.
Through volunteer-driven initiatives such as the Ladner Thrift Shop, the Dogwood Gift Shop, and various fundraising activities, generations of Delta residents have contributed their time and talents to the organization.
For many volunteers, the Auxiliary is far more than a charity. It is a community built around service, friendship, and a shared commitment to supporting local healthcare.
What Is Happening?
A requisition meeting has been called under the provisions available to members of nonprofit societies in British Columbia.
Such meetings allow members to formally raise concerns and vote on matters they believe require the attention of the membership.
While the details of the upcoming vote remain a matter for members, it is understood that the meeting could result in significant changes to the current Board of Directors depending on the outcome.
Supporters of the requisition effort argue that members deserve an opportunity to express their views regarding the recent change in the organization's leadership and future direction.
Others believe the New Board should be given the opportunity to continue implementing changes already underway.
The June 15 meeting will provide members with an opportunity to decide.
Concerns Raised by Some Volunteers
Documents circulating among some volunteers indicate several recurring concerns.
Among the issues raised are:
- Communication between leadership and volunteers.
- Transparency regarding organizational decisions.
- Governance and bylaw compliance.
- Financial change oversight and reporting.
- The future direction of the Ladner Thrift Shop.
- Volunteer morale and organizational culture.
Delta City News has reviewed documents outlining these concerns but has not independently verified all claims contained within them.
The Board of Directors has previously stated publicly that it remains committed to maintaining a respectful, safe, and sustainable organization while fulfilling its obligations under the BC Societies Act.
As with many nonprofit organizations undergoing periods of change, differing perspectives have emerged regarding how best to move forward.
A Vote That Could Shape the Future
The upcoming meeting represents more than a routine organizational matter.
For many of the three hundred current and past volunteers, it is an opportunity to have their voices heard regarding the future of an organization they have helped build over many decades.
For the Board, it is an opportunity to receive experienced direction from the membership and continue serving the organization in accordance with that mandate.
Regardless of the outcome, most participants appear to share a common goal: preserving the long-term success of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society and its ability to support healthcare in the Delta community.
Looking Ahead
Delta City News will continue following this story as it develops.
Following the June 15 meeting, we intend to report on the results of the vote, reactions from both members and leadership, and what the outcome may mean for the future of the Society and its operations.
As one of Delta's most important volunteer organizations enters a critical chapter, many in the community will be watching closely.
The future direction of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary Society may ultimately be decided by the members who helped build it.
